Hover Blade

"Hey look! No hands!" -Unknown

Hover blades are a type of movement cube that allows your robot to hover over the landscape, easily navigating tricky obstacles, such as the crater field in Hellion Crater. Hover blades provide their own propulsion and turning as well as lift, and their hover height can be changed with Spacebar and Shift, but the thrust they generate decreases with increased height above ground. They will also try to keep your robot stable. However, climbing steep elevations may cause your robot to flip over if proper construction is not completed to compensate for this.

Flipping Hovercrafts Edit

Hovercrafts, or hovers, flip over easily. You can make your hover harder to flip over by putting heavier blocks on the bottom or by raising the hover blades to a higher position on your bot. This usually works, but if your bot is unbalanced, going uphill, off a cliff or ricocheting off an obstacle can result in a flip. In this case, the hover blades will attempt to rectify themselves, but this does not always work. The lower your center of gravity in regards to your hover blades, the harder your bot will be to flip over.

The main advantage of the hover blades is that they allow the user to traverse otherwise precarious or otherwise impossible terrain, such as the aforementioned crater field or climbing steep hills. Contrary to what you would expect, the hover blades' maximum speed is actually lower than that of wheels, thus requiring swift manoeuvring to catch a target (this has been changed in a recent update; hover blades are faster than wheels a tier higher than them now, but they cannot be overburdened). Like wheels, they provide a braking force when pushed past top speed, but this force would appear to be noticeably smaller than that of wheels, allowing significantly higher speeds with the attachment of thrusters.

Hover blades also provide evasion from plasma launcher blasts at when hovering at maximum height. With the recent update, sufficient use of thrusters coupled with the increased speed of hover blades allows for outspeeding of plasma volleys, dodging the blast entirely.

There is another, less well-known use for hover blades; stable fliers without helium. However, these are more of a novelty as they are hard to pilot effectively in battles, due to their tendency to flip the aircraft upright, preventing turning.

Weight values are estimated due to the blocks providing self lift.

The above table has since changed with updates, although this editor cannot find all the relevant information to amend it. Notably, prices increase much more drastically in higher tiers, as does Robot Rank and required level for unlock. Tech Points are assumed to be obsolete at this point, as they do not provide a means of unlocking components any longer. Weights are independent of propulsion and top speed has increased (when not overburdened).

  • Until  0.5.193, hover blades wouldn't recognize bridges as solid objects in the environment, and as such not receive ground-thrust from them. This often resulted in hover bots collapsing onto bridges and getting stuck when attempting to fly over them.
  • Tier 1 Hover Blades were previously available, but they have since been removed from the game.
